GRADE 1: The Holy Trinity

This book focuses on God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The text begins by describing who we are as members of the Maronite Church.

Once the students understand the concept of Church as family, they are introduced to Jesus. They learn how Maronites prepare for the birth of Jesus and how Mary, the mother of Jesus, is our mother, too.

First graders next explore the Divine Father of Jesus and learn that God made everything in the world. The students will explore ways they can show others what God the Father is like.

Next, the children look at what Jesus taught. The students will see how Jesus calls us to forgive those who hurt us.

The last unit focuses on the Holy Spirit as our friend. Students will discover how the Holy Spirit raised Jesus form the dead and then came upon the apostles on Pentecost. Woven throughout the year are stories of Maronite saints and holy ones, notably St. Maron and St. Ephrem.

The second unit focuses specifically on welcoming the Lord through the seasons of the Glorious Birth of Our Lord and Epiphany.

From there, the focus shifts to the Season of Great Lent and the Holy Mystery of Pentecost. Students will define sin as disobeying the Ten Commandments. They will learn about God’s great mercy and forgiveness. They will also explore the steps in the Holy Mystery of Penance.

Next, the students learn about the Holy Mystery of Eucharist. They are introduced to the Divine Service of the Holy Mysteries.

Second graders will learn how the Holy Mysteries help us follow Jesus. They will learn how Maronites celebrate Jesus’ unselfish love, especially on Lazarus Saturday and the days of the Passion Week.

In the last unit, students will learn more about our Maronite prayers and traditions. The children will discover why Mary holds a special place in the Maronite Church and see that the Holy Spirit is always with us to help us meet Jesus in the Holy Mysteries.

The third graders will explore different ways Maronites remember the faithful departed and the feasts of Mary throughout the Maronite Church year. Students will then explore the Church Year in more detail.

HIGH SCHOOL SERIES
Book One: Culture, Liturgy, History

Adolescents are in the process of developing into adults. Although it is easy to "go along with the crowd," in terms of values and identity, it is not always advisable. In this section, the students are invited to actively consider the forces shaping their personalities: the cultural values of the United States, the values of their ethnic culture and sub-cultures around them, and the stories and symbols shaping their lives.

Students’ main connection to their faith is Liturgy. The role of catechesis is to help the students understand and relate to the liturgical rites. In the Liturgy Section the Divine Liturgy and the Mysteries are explained. The students’ experience of the liturgy should be heightened from considering it through the images and stories used in these lessons.

The History Section presents an overview of Maronite history from the year 40 C.E. to the present. The lessons describe the factors involved in the shaping of Lebanon – the permanent home of the Maronites, Lebanon’s role in the world, and the experience of Maronites in the United States.

Item No.: C032. Price: $6.95 (student text).
Item No.: C033. Price: $14.95 (Teacher's manual) (Out of Print)

Book Two: Religion, Theology, Non-Christian Religions

In order to prepare for the Theology section, the section on Religion asks the students to consider the broader issues of a definition of religion, the value of religious symbols, the distinction between the secular and the sacred, and the role of religion in America. In an attempt to diminish any interest in religious cults, the final lesson describes cults in general, and using three of these, contrasts their beliefs with Catholicism.

The Theology Section presents the 10 major themes of Maronite Christian Theology, beginning with "Incarnation," as that belief influences all others. Narratives from the New Testament are included in almost every lesson, connecting theology with scripture. In reading the parts of the narrative, students can imagine the feelings of those who were alive at the time of Christ, and can gain an interest in reading scripture. Theology is connected with liturgy through the photograph captions-phrases from the Hoosoyee of the Maronite Liturgy–and the suggested opening prayer which is from the same Hoosoyee.

The students are exposed to many different religions in the United States. Having studied their own theology, the section on Non-Christian religions offers the students a chance to learn about three major world religions, in a Christian context. In the concluding lesson, the beliefs and practices of these religions are contrasted with those of Christianity.
Item No.: C034. Price: $7.95 (Student Text)
Item No.: C035. Price: $14.95 (Teacher's Manual) (Out of Print)

Book Three: Marriage, Spirituality, Art & Literature

With the Catholic Church’s firm belief in the sanctity of marriage, it is imperative to present this topic as part of our catechetical program. The lessons begin by introducing the idea of a healthy self-love that is rooted in a relationship with God, followed by a lesson on romantic love, and lessons on marriage and children. The final lesson is "Single Life," for those considering a religious vocation or a single lifestyle.

The Spirituality Section begins with lessons on the Trinity, and continues with lessons on faith, hope and love, interspersed with lessons on contemplative, reflective, and daily prayer. The final lesson, "Life in the Spirit," addresses the need to cultivate a sacred worldview in order to remain firmly planted in the Christian life. An opening reading is offered for each lesson from John’s gospel, Jesus speaking at the Last Supper. These words are the most beautiful in scripture and are presented here in an effort to draw the students into a spiritual relationship with Christ.

One aim of the entire series is to show the students that our faith is much more than simply going to church. In this section the students see that Christianity has been a major influence in art and literature throughout the ages. They are introduced to some of the masterworks of Christian art and music, and to the enduring themes of art and literature that reveal so much about human nature. The final lesson presents Maronite art and architecture.
Item No.: C036. Price: $10.00 (Student Text)
Item No.: C037 Price: $14.95 (Teacher's Manual) (Out of Print)

Book Four: Science & Technology, Morality, Church

Many people see science and faith as irreconcilable. These lessons begin by presenting the question "Can a scientist believe in God?" and continue by presenting topics from physics, biology and psychology (courses the students will take either in high school or college), with the Catholic viewpoint explained. The final lesson, Faith and Technology, asks students to critique the increasing importance of technology in our society.

The Morality Section presents five lessons on moral principles, such as integrity, and five lessons n specific areas of ethics, such as business ethics. Quotations from the Catechism of the Catholic Church appear in the margin to elucidate points made in the text. Each lesson has an opening reading from the Epistles, to make the students aware that moral questions have been at the forefront of Christianity since the earliest decades. There are ample activity sheets to assist in their understanding themselves and Christian morality. Included in the activity sheets are interviews with Maronites presenting the importance of faith in their lives.

In the Church section, the students learn about the spread of Christianity in the early centuries and the Orthodox and Protestant churches. The section ends with the lessons, "The Maronite Church," which offers salient aspects and a brief history of the Church, and "On Being a Maronite Christian," which invites the students to think about their role in the Church.
